Working Life of Salary Insufficient for UK Labor Force to Join Wealthiest 10%, Study Finds

Per new study, the typical employee in the UK would have to work over five decades of earnings to reach the wealth level of the most affluent 10% in the country.

Growing Economic Disparity Across Decades

This research analyzed net worth information from the 2020-22 timeframe and discovered that back in the pre-financial crisis era, it would have needed 38 years' worth of median full-time earnings to reach the top 10th of the financial hierarchy.

A research lead part of the study observed: "Economic disparities in Britain are now so large that a typical full-time employee saving all their earnings during their working years would remain unable to reach the top of the financial hierarchy."

Quantifying the Financial Disparity

The study discovered that the gap between the assets of the average person and an individual in the top 10% was £1 million in 2006-08, but had widened to 1.3 million pounds in real terms by the pandemic years.

The analyst continued: "These differences are doubly concerning as financial progression in Britain is limited – those who commence life wealthy tend to remain affluent, and the opposite holds true."

Relative Wealth Inequality

Although the economic divide expanding in specific figures, the portion of complete net worth in the UK held by the most affluent homes – termed "proportional economic disparity" – has been "mostly consistent since the 1980s," as stated in the study.

During this period, overall assets in the UK rose substantially from triple the gross domestic product, to nearly seven and a half times.

Drivers of Financial Divide

So-called "passive" gains, through growing real estate costs and adjustments to retirement fund assessments, were the primary factors of the widening wealth gap over the past decade, per the analysis.

These gains typically went to senior citizens with real estate, the study demonstrates – intensifying the intergenerational wealth divide.

Intergenerational Economic Gaps

The median economic difference between individuals aged 30-34 and sixty-somethings more than doubled in actual value, from £135,000 in the mid-2000s, to £310,000.

Regional Disparities

Additionally, there were stark regional variations, with the average level of wealth in 2020-22 reaching £290,000 in the southeastern region, where property prices have typically increased quickly, versus £110k in the northeastern region.

Pandemic Period Impact

Amid the health crisis, when numerous employees were covered under the taxpayer-backed furlough scheme, and Covid shutdowns limited opportunities for spending, the information reveals many households were capable of accumulating, growing their net worth.

Higher-income households performed significantly better, nevertheless. "The average household in the lowest-income quintile saw their liquid savings rise by merely £80 over the pandemic period (from 2019 to 2022), roughly identical to the two years pre-pandemic. In contrast, the average household in the top income bracket saw their cash reserves rise by £4,200," the report finds.
